Chemistry can be Fun!

Doggy Style

For some time (since 1876) veterinarians have been describing a type of tumor in dogs that occurs in the genital region of dogs. it is known by various monickers including CTVT (Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor), Sticker Tumor, and Infectious Sarcoma.

It has long been thought of as being a sexually transmissible disease- and it is- but with a twist.

Ok- so there is nothing new about sexually transmitted infections, and really nothing new about sexually transmitted viruses that contain ongogenes that cause cancer. Well known examples are genital wart viruses (of certain genotypes) that lead to squammous cell cancers of the cervix, and Hepatitis B virus that can lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular (liver) cancer. (Three cheers for the Australian scientists who discovered a vaccine to prevent HPV induced cervical cancer).

The amazing thing about this dog venereal tumor is that THERE IS NO VIRUS (or anything else) that causes it. Here comes the amazing part: it is the tumor ITSELF that is infectious!

This is quite bizarre. We all know that "cancer " isn't supposed to be "catching" or contagious.

This condition is more like a parasitic skin graft (allograft) than any previously known infectious disease. Genetic studies have shown that it probably arose a few thousand years ago in a single dog- and has been transmitted through biting and dog sex ever since. It probably began life as a skin tumor that then mutated to somehow avoid being detected by he dog's immune system (perhaps by downregulating expression of MHC surface molecules). In the process, it's ditched a few unwanted chromosomes completely.

So... in summary... this organism is a thousand-year-old bit of dog tumor. Should it be classified as a sub-species of canine? .. or should it be classified next to "Dog" on the evolutionary tree as an infectious unicellular organism?

It turns out that this sort of thing also happens to a certain type of russian hamster- and also may be resposible for a mysterious "Facial Tumor Disease" currently decimating the population of Tasmanian Devils on the Island of Tasmania (off the south-eastern corner of Australia for the eographically challenged). The dog disease, however, rarely metastasizes and only kills puppies (so thats OK).

I wonder if any human diseases will/do/have evolve(d) in this manner. (Sounds like a plot to a B-grade shlock-horror film).

1001 More Stupid Things You Must Do Before You Die: Tales From the Palliative Care Bookshelf

For goodness sake! Last time i was in a bookshop (real, not amazonian) i saw yet another one of those 101 or 1001 THINGS YOU MUST DO BEFORE YOU DIE books.

This one was something along the lines of "101 British Garden Walks you Must Do Before You Die". Really? Must I? I don't even know what a "bandwagon" is - but every publisher seems to have jumped on board. I guess with baby boomers nearing death, the market needs to squeeze out every last dollar.

If you're actively dying these incessant lists are just going to stress you out! You'll die feeling like a failure only having reached #356 of the chronologically arranged movies in "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die"- a great pity as when the "Talkies" get going- cinema really seems to take off.

What about those 1001 books? That's going to take a lifetime (literally...um... er.. and literally)... and also figuratively in the sense that the whole thing resembles the "1001 Tales from the Arabian Nights" where Scheherazade has to keep spinning yarns (Our autobiographical narratives) to stop her homicidal (Uxoricidal) husband ("Death") from decapitating her. When the last story ends, she's dead.

And while we're on the subject- what about this strange fascination with the particular numerology? Why 101, 1001, 10001? Because they are prime? And why specify the "before" in "before you die"? It's not like you can do anything when you are dead- can you? Maybe when you're an angel- you get so busy you don't have time.

Here's My List:

"11 Things You REALLY Must Do Before You Die"

1. Make a will.
2. Phone people that pissed you off in your life and tell them to F-ck off.
3. Stop breathing.
4. Say goodbye.
5. Plan your funeral.
6. Make a video that begins with "If you are watching this then it means that i am dead..."
7. Go rollerskating.
8. Phone the after hours help line of "Ocean Spray Pty Ltd" ... tell them you just drank a glass of "Ocean Spray Light" (OSL) that contains "No artificial colorings or flavourings"... and say the following in a short, desperate, breathy voice-
"Drank OSL with NACOF-"
"Can't breathe-"
"Allergy to sucralose!!!"
"Call ambulance!!!"
"Help!!!"
"Wife is Lawyer!" (small voice)

9. Tell your family that you loved them even though they disappointed you and you disappointed them.
10. Swim towards the light
11. At the last moment, and after a life of vigilante-like zealous agnosticism, recant and call in your Rabbi.

Battlestar Galactica is Frakkin' Great

http://statlerandwaldorf.files.wordpress.com/2007/06/grace-park.jpg

warning: gushing fan ramblings follow-

Wow, i was on the edge of my seat last night watching the 6th episode of the current and final (sigh) series of Battlestar Galactica (otherwise known in download circles as S04E06- sounds like chemistry). Partly because my wife (NEVER previously a SF fan- and certainly in no way a geek/nerd chick) got the good seat in front of the Mac (downloaded episode)- I perching on the edge of a stool.

Poor "Mr Gator" - leg blown of by Anders the Android- "Keep those fingers away from the hybrid keyboard Anders!!!". Luckily for him, Starbuck had a supply of 'blood dust' or whatever- and she knows how to handle a "Morpha" syringe like the true junkie that she is. That nasty "Six" got her just desserts - she just couldn't forgive and forget (being shot in sewage) could she?. Athena (see above) gives one of the dying Boomers the cold shoulder- so much for her 'humanity'. And what the frak is the hybrid a hybrid of? Cylon and Human? "The Dying Leader" will apparently understand her Opera house dream....

So what's next? I guess they'll resurrect Xenabot .... will Adama and Roslyn make out? Phew!

The Deco 'Fembot' : Tamara de Lempicka

http://terminalsigma.files.wordpress.com/2007/06/tamara.jpg
"There was nothing ordinary about Lempicka; even her name clings to the tongue like an exotic marmalade. Flamboyant (paradoxically remaining true to herself while being a slave to fashion) and imperious, she pinned down her husbands like butterflies in a case, gave lavish parties for hundreds and indulged in every vice that came her way. In the Paris salon of the poet Natalie Barney, she sniffed cocaine and drank sloe gin fizzes laced with hashish among the likes of Andre Gide. On the banks of the Seine, she picked up sailors and female prostitutes. After her nocturnal debauches, she painted until dawn. Her life style (and her ''affair'' with the Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio) sent her first husband, Tadeusz Lempicki, packing into the arms of a plump heiress."

I've always liked these paintings- as with everything Deco! The women all look streamlined, almost "android" in appearances. The long tubular fingers look like they're made of metal. Deco Fembots?

Icosidodecahedrons, Psychobabble, Platonic Solids and Extra Dimensions

http://www.efofex.com/images/fxdpre8.gif

When my older sister was in high school she came one day with a football-like cardboard sculpture. She said: "It's an Icosidodecahedron". Icosi-dodeca-hedron. I said it again and again- like a mantra. Until the sounds stop being words and start being sounds again without meaning.

On that point i think it's fascinating to listen to foreign languages ( i don't understand any). German in particular sounds agitated and funny- think Siegfried from Get Smart (Shmart!). Danish sounds like English played backwards, Japanese: cold, constipated and forgetful (old joke). What does it sound like when Germans imitate English? Do they find it funny?

Once you learn a language, those arbitrary phonemes are no longer audible- all you hear is the meaning. I guess our brains are wired to accept language. Try and imagine what English sounds like to a native Japanese speaker. What does Japanese sound like to a Japanese?- the same as English to an English speaker.

When novels are translated, the settings and names are not. A "Raskolnikov" in an English translation of "Crime and Punishment" immediately sounds alien and foreign- "Roger" would be better. There was no intention of the author for the character to have a foreign name!

I digress-
My sister's Icosidodecahedron ended up being one of my prized possesions- suspended (next to my "airplant") on fine fishing line above my desk, slowly rotating in the breeze. It was composed of 20 triangles and 12 pentagons.

I was reminded of it having re-listened to a great lecture on extra-dimensional space by Prof John Barrow. Why is it that in 2 dimensions you can make a regular polygon with any number of sides above 2: triangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, octagons etc BUT there are only FIVE 3-D equivalents: the Platonic Solids.

Why is that? it seems God-the-Geometer has been bizarrely stingy. If the universe really has 11 spatial dimensions- are there ANY regular solids allowable?

Good Old Fashioned Old Testament Slavery

[11+Parting+of+the+Red+Sea.jpg]

The Jewish festival of Passover celebrates the freedom of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt... hooray! but as it turns out Judaism is not actually opposed to slavery per-se. This fact does take some of the gloss off one of the high holidays.

The Torah contains numerous references to slavery: i guess by today's standards it seems pretty bizarre to condone any form of slavery... but at the time these laws were probably pretty liberal. Nevertheless, if you believe in the Torah as the word of God dictated to Moses - then you do have some explaining to do... "oh- they weren't REALLY slaves- more like servants!". Intricate and long winded rabbinical explanation here.

Summary:

OK THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR SLAVES
keep male and female slaves
keep 'hebrew' and non-hebrew slaves
beat them around a bit so they take a few days to recover
rape or have sex with female slaves as long as they weren't betrothed (implied but not stated)

NOT OK
keep them for more than 6 years (but you can keep their wives and children)
knock out a tooth or an eye (that'll set them free!)
kill them
rape or have sex with betrothed slaves (you'll need to make a steak offering at the steakhouse temple for that one).

Spiegelmers: Mirror Image Nucleic Acid Polymers

http://www.acc.umu.se/~coppelia/images/art/mirror.gif

Monoclonal antibodies are all the rage at the moment- particularly for treating autoimmune diseases. Generally speaking, they are used to bind to, and inactivate, target molecules. A similar idea is to make a binding structure out of nucleic acids (the same thing that DNA and RNA is made of) - rather than long chains of amino acids.

I guess this is a little like "eating the recipe"! Nucleic acids are 'supposed' to be instructions for cells to make protein. They are usually the 'thinkers' rather than the 'doers'.

These molecules can be generated in a random fashion, then selected for their binding capability to the required target. Unfortunately, nucleic acid chains are not as stable as proteins, and are rapidly broken down by the body. One solution is to make them out of 'mirror-image' nucleic acids that cannot be broken down by the body's natural enzymes. (Spiegel is German for 'Mirror'). Clever.

Arvo Part's "Spiegel im Spiegel"

thanks to aron for the 'heads up'

R.I.P Jimmy Guiffre

I just happened to put on my DVD of "Jazz on a Summer's Day" yesterday ... and the kids started jumping around to the opening track... (here on youtube for your listening pleasure).
I found out who Jimmy Guiffre was 5 mins before i found out that he was dead- he died last week. I guess i just missed him! This is a song called "The Train and the River".
The film is a documentary of the 1958 Newport jazz Festival... up until yesterday my favourite part was actually the cellist smoking in a dark room and playing Bach. That and Anita O'Day.

Yeeee Haw! Old Crow Medicine Show.

Listening to the guys from "Old Crow Medicine Show" (alt-country-bluegrass)- you'd think they were 70 year old hillbillies. Great stuff! Great harmonies. I turn them up to past 11 and practise my cryin'/wailin' "vocal breaks" in the car or the way to work. I sound like a goat. I wish i could fiddle.

On this subject - yet another great podcast from Radiolab about the universality of country music. To summarise-country music only became popular when more than half the population had moved from the country to urban areas for work. The sense of longing for lost love, lost home, lost anything- makes it attractive to immigrants and losers the world over.

Distance -> Velocity -> Acceleration ->?

http://www.minimotosgo.com/img/drag.jpg

I find it fascinating that you can be charged/fined - not just for driving faster than the speed limit- but if your acceleration is too great. Apparently it is illegal to 'drag' race somebody stopped at a red traffic light- even if your car never actually exceeds the speed limit. Who knew? This is the sort of issue that should have been raised when i was studying calculus about 20 years ago!

But why stop at acceleration?

The rate of change of 'distance' is 'velocity'.
The rate of change of 'velocity' is 'acceleration'.

But what do you call the rate of change of acceleration, or the rate of change of the rate of change of acceleration or.... you get the point.

Believe it or not.. there actually are terms for these but apparently they're not all that widely accepted. Once again to the rescue wikipedia-

The rate of change of 'acceleration' is 'jerk' ...or possibly 'jolt' or 'surge' or 'lurch'
The rate of change of 'jerk' is 'snap'.. or possibly 'jounce'.
The rate of change of 'snap' is 'crackle'
The rate of change of 'crackle' is 'pop'
And since nobody else has claimed it i now official stake my claim to name the next kinematic derivative thus:

The rate of change of 'pop' is 'whoa!'

"I'm sorry officer- was it my acceleration, my jerk or my snap, crackle, pop or whoa!?"

Are There 7 Extra Dimensions?

Years ago i became fascinated by the idea of extra spatial dimensions after reading "Flatland", "The Planiverse", and (most of all) "The 4th Dimension and How to Get There" by Rudy Rucker. Subsequently, all of Rudy's books have been a GREAT disappointment as he veered towards kooky spiritualism.

Anyway- here's the take home message: it is very difficult for us to imagine a 4 dimensional world- perhaps impossible. One cannot point to a direction at 90 degrees to reality. You can, however, get a taste of the idea by imagining how a creature confined to a 2-D plane might perceive a 3-D solid object entering it's world.

A sphere passing through this 'flatland' plane would appear first as a point hovering in empty space, become an enlarging circle, and then a progressively smaller one once more- before disappearing completely. A 4 dimensional "hyper-sphere" passing through our 3-D world would appear as an enlarging then diminishing solid sphere in empty space.

Another lecture here. (couldn't embed it).

PicLens is Cool

PicLens is a great "plugin" /"add on" for your web-browser... (i'm using firefox on a mac with OS X) .

It allows you to view web images embedded in an infinite grid up against a virtual 'black wall'. From there you can fly over, zoom in and out- and play a slideshow. I use it for showing the kids stuff from flickr ... we watched a slideshow of "hot air ballons" over breakfast this morning.

It's so cool i'm thinking about setting this up in the waiting room. The flickr tag system is great: i tested it out with the search terms "calm" , "portrait", "landscape" etc and didn't find anything that could be thought to be porn.... Here's a youtube of the software in action.

Ocean Spray Light Controversy

cranberry light

Ocean Spray "Light" cranberry juice: according to the label it does contains "Artificial Sweetener"- SUCRALOSE (that explains why it tastes CRAP) but then go on to claim that the product contains "No artificial flavourings".

A paradox indeed! Are they claiming that pure 'sweetness' is not a flavour? Or are they claiming that Sucralose is not artificial but somehow REAL? Hmmm.

Further research (5 mins on wikipedia) reveals a history of legal bickering between the different manufacturers of 'sugar-substitutes'. The manufacturers of sucralose have claimed "Because it comes from sugar, sucralose tastes like sugar". Maybe it does actually taste like sugar (and actually it doesn't) but that doesn't diminish the fact that it is artificial.

Anyway- i thought- what the heck- i'll actually call the toll-free number. At 9pm at night. Just to be cranky. Because i am no longer a "citizen"- i am a "consumer". Guess what? A very nice woman answered the phone. She was somewhat surprised that the phone had actually rung. She said nobody usually calls after hours. I suggested she had a pretty good job- being paid not to answer the phone and she "hmmed" in the affirmative.

She listened patiently to my complaint. She "tsk tsked". She seemed sympathetic- and i imagined her to be a young mother- perhaps herself one day confronted by the Ocean Spray Light Paradox in her own Juice Aisle at her local supermarket.

She offered to get my details so somebody could call me back "first thing in the morning". As i don't like to be awoken by Ocean Spray company reps - i decided "no.".

I imagine my complaint being transcribed, emailed, printed, faxed etc all the way up the chain-of-command at Ocean Spray in Massachusetts until it arrives on the desk of the CEO. (A Montage is needed).

"My goodness! This label on our Ocean Spray Light is factually incorrect! Find the most junior person we can blame and sack them immediately.".
